Consulting patients abroad: medical consilium process

Learn how to submit a clinical summary when a local doctor is required to issue documents. This article explains the cross-border medical consilium process.

Updated over a week ago

When is a consilium needed?

After the consultation, if the patient may require documents that must be issued by a doctor authorised to practise in their country, you’ll see a button labelled Fill the form.

This means your clinical summary will be submitted to a local colleague for medical review. The local doctor will assess whether issuing any documents is appropriate, based on your input and local healthcare regulations.

What is your role?

This process does not involve prescribing or issuing documents directly. It serves as a peer review mechanism to support safe and compliant cross-border care.

Your responsibility is to provide a clear and professional summary of the consultation, including:

  • Relevant symptoms, clinical findings, and patient concerns

  • Preliminary assessment or clinical impression

  • Any relevant treatment advice or suggestions (if appropriate)

  • Supporting materials (e.g. notes, files, medical images)

Final decisions regarding documentation are made exclusively by the local doctor, in line with national laws and clinical guidelines.

How to submit the clinical summary

After the session ends:

  1. Click Fill the form

  2. Complete all relevant fields

  3. Upload any supporting files or notes

  4. Click Submit

Your submission will be reviewed by a local doctor.

What happens after submission?

  • A local doctor will review your clinical summary.

  • If any additional details or clarifications are needed, they may contact you directly through the platform.

  • If documents are issued, they are prepared and sent directly to the patient.

  • If not, the patient will be informed accordingly.

  • The consultation is marked as complete once the local review is finalised.
