Sick Note (CIT) in Portugal
A Sick Note (CIT) is a medical certificate confirming temporary incapacity to work or study due to illness. It can be issued by a private doctor after an online or in-person consultation. This document is commonly used to justify short absences from work, school, or other personal responsibilities.
Unlike the official baixa médica issued through the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS), a CIT does not grant access to social security sick pay or benefits. It serves as a private medical confirmation only, recognised by many employers and educational institutions for internal record purposes.
The certificate includes the patient’s name, date of consultation, medical reason (in general terms), and the recommended period of absence. It may also include the doctor’s signature, professional details, and clinic or platform information.
Important notes:
Valid for private use or employer documentation only.
Not accepted by Social Security (Segurança Social).
Cannot be issued for patients under 18 years old.
The doctor decides the duration of incapacity based on the medical evaluation.
This document can be requested online via Oladoctor from a licensed physician in Portugal.
How much does a Sick Note (CIT) cost?

Who can issue a Sick Note (CIT)?

Can it replace an official “baixa médica”?

No. This document is available only for patients aged 18 and older.
How long does it take to receive the certificate?
In most cases, the document is delivered within a few hours after the consultation.
Where can I use this certificate?
It can be presented to employers, schools, or other institutions that accept private medical confirmation of temporary incapacity.
